“Going somewhere, champ?” He lifted his gaze to lock on the figure reclining insolently on the lowest branch. An aloof grin stretched his lips, both eyes— a faded but lively gray— seeming to dance with arrogant amusement. “Groceries? Errand?”

“I’m leaving.” His tone was blunt and incontestable.

“That so?” His good humor had apparently left. Sitting up, he braced an arm over his knee, leaning forward. “That’s a bold statement.” When the younger boy’s gaze remained steadily on him, he sighed, head twitching somewhat to the side by some intrinsic quirk of nature. “The orphanage will miss you.”

“I’m not here to play around.”

“Then I’m obligated to warn you, I am the path’s guardian. Before anyone leaves Renity Village with intent to take the gym leader challenge, they must first prove their capability by defeating me in an official Battle Team campaign.”

“I know the rules.”

“Begin.”
